AI can build the parts of an online store you see, but not the parts that make it a store. An AI ecommerce website builder drafts your storefront design, product page layouts and product copy in minutes, while payments, inventory, tax and shipping come from the commerce platform underneath. So choosing one is really choosing a store platform, and the AI is the fast way in.

Below, the AI builders we checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026 are sorted into three groups: a store built in, a store the AI generates as code, and selling through links and embeds. If you need a website more than a shop, start with our comparison of the best AI website builders instead.

What the AI does, and what the platform does

A store has two layers: the storefront shoppers see, and the machinery behind it. AI is good at the first and, at most, a setup assistant for the second.

What an AI builder can do for a store:

  • Design the storefront: home page, collection grid, product page template, header and footer.
  • Lay out product pages: gallery, price and variants, add-to-cart button, details, shipping and returns.
  • Draft copy: product descriptions from your notes, category intros, search titles and descriptions.
  • Switch on platform features where the vendor supports it. Wix says its Aria agent can add business features such as payments.

What still comes from the platform:

  • Payment processing and the checkout itself.
  • Inventory: stock counts, variants like size and color, sold-out behavior.
  • Tax: sales tax or VAT for each buyer's location.
  • Shipping: rates, zones, labels and tracking emails.
  • Orders, refunds, receipts and customer records.

Some vendors say this outright. WordPress.com's support page on building a website with AI says ecommerce and integrations aren't built by the AI; you add them afterwards, for example with WooCommerce. Even where a builder's AI sets up payments, each sale runs through the platform's commerce tools and a payment processor, not through the AI.

Tax rules vary by country and region, and some depend on where the buyer lives. This is general information, not tax or legal advice: check what your platform calculates and what it leaves to you.

Keep the AI away from product facts

The real risk with AI product copy isn't bland writing; it's invented facts, like a thread count or country of origin you never gave it. Feed it the facts and forbid the rest:

Write a 60-word product description for the Harbor linen shirt. Use only these facts: 100% linen, relaxed fit, sizes S to XL, machine wash cold. Don't add materials, measurements, certifications or claims that aren't in this list.

Then check every description against your spec sheet. Shipping times, return windows and warranty terms belong on pages you write from your actual policy.

Three kinds of AI ecommerce website builder

"Built in" means the store runs on the platform. "AI-generated" means the AI writes the store into a project that connects to a payment or commerce service. "Limited" means no full store of its own: selling runs through payment processing, links, buttons, plugins or embeds.

No-code ecommerce website builders with a store built in

If you want an ecommerce website without coding, all in one account, start here. The catch is lock-in: Wix, B12, Jimdo and Strikingly document no way to export the site, and Squarespace's content export leaves store pages behind. Your products and design stay as long as the store does. If one is close but not right, compare the closest alternatives to Wix's AI builder or alternatives to Squarespace's Blueprint AI.

AI builders that generate the store as code

These builders generate an application, and a store can be one. You can usually take the code with you, but code isn't the store's data. Lovable's export leaves out database data and uploaded files, which are exported separately; Replit says databases don't copy over automatically; Base44's exported code still calls its backend (see how Base44 compares with other AI builders). Choose this group for custom store behavior you're ready to own as an app; for a plain shop, it's more moving parts than a built-in store.

Builders that sell through links, buttons and embeds

Payment links, buttons and embeds are enough for a few products, a deposit or a course. This group is the wrong choice for a catalog with variants and stock to manage, and Durable's own FAQ says it isn't designed for ecommerce.

What to check before you choose

  1. Can the free plan or trial take money? Often not. Wix's free plan has no online payments, Hostinger's trial stores can't connect payments, Squarespace needs a paid plan to publish after its 14-day trial, and Replit's Stripe connector needs the paid Core plan. Our roundup of free AI website builders shows what each free plan actually publishes.
  2. Which plan turns on payments? WebStarts lists products, orders, shipping and taxes, but payments only on its Business plan. B12 puts commerce on its Website plan. Price the plan that takes money, not the one that shows products.
  3. Is there a transaction fee? Ask whether the platform takes its own cut of each sale on top of the payment processor's fee, and whether that changes by plan. Strikingly's pricing page lists its free plan with one product at a 5% transaction fee: fine for testing demand, worth leaving once sales are steady.
  4. Can you export products and orders? Webflow's help article on exporting site code says ecommerce doesn't work in a code export, but ecommerce data can be exported separately as CSV. WebStarts documents CSV exports of products and orders. Hostinger's manual-mode export leaves the store behind. Ask before you add your first hundred products, not after.
  5. Who handles tax and shipping? WebStarts lists both as store features. Elsewhere, check what's built in and what needs an extra app, plugin or integration.

The common setup: a store platform plus a marketing site

A common setup splits the job: a hosted store platform runs the catalog, cart and checkout, and a separate marketing site carries the home page, brand story, landing pages and guides, with every "Shop" or "Buy" button pointing into the store. Several builders in the table work this way: Framer through Shopify storefront plugins, Dorik through Shopify Buy Buttons, Mixo through payment links.

It's worth it when you already run a store and want a better marketing site without migrating products, or when a few items and a payment link cover checkout. It isn't worth it for a large catalog where most visitors land on product pages: then the store is the site, and a second one is just more to keep in sync.

To set it up:

  1. Choose the checkout first: an existing store, a hosted store platform, or payment links such as Stripe Payment Links, which open a hosted checkout page.
  2. Keep catalog, cart, accounts and order pages in the store. Put home, about, story, guides and campaign landing pages on the marketing site.
  3. If your store platform lets you connect a subdomain, use one like shop.yourbrand.com so both halves share your domain.
  4. Point each buy button at a specific product page or payment link, not the store's home page. Every extra click before checkout is another chance to leave.
  5. Test on a phone: tap every buy button, complete one low-value purchase or use your processor's test mode, then refund it.

Where FNJ fits, and where it doesn't

FNJ's AI builder doesn't build stores: it has no cart, checkout, product database or customer log-ins, and it doesn't handle tax or shipping. It builds the marketing half of the split above, a complete responsive website designed from your description plus a reference such as a screenshot or the link of a site you like, exported as a Next.js project or static HTML that you host yourself. Your buy buttons then link to Stripe Payment Links or to product pages in the shop you already run, which makes FNJ the right fit only when the store lives elsewhere; for that case you can build a small-business website with FNJ's AI builder. If you need the catalog and checkout in one place, choose a builder with a store built in and weigh the field in our guide to the best AI website builders.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI build an online store by itself?

No. An AI builder can design the storefront, lay out product pages and draft product copy, but payments, inventory, tax, shipping and orders come from the commerce platform it runs on. Even when a builder's AI sets up payments, each sale runs through the platform's store features and a payment processor.

Can I build an ecommerce website without coding?

Yes. Builders with a store built in, such as Wix, Squarespace, Webflow or WordPress.com on its Commerce plan, handle the catalog and checkout without code, usually on a paid plan. For a few items, payment links from Stripe or PayPal on your site's buttons also work without code.

Can I export my products and orders if I switch platforms?

It depends on the platform, so check before you build. Webflow documents CSV exports of ecommerce data and WebStarts documents CSV exports of products and orders, while Squarespace's content export leaves store pages out and Wix, B12, Jimdo and Strikingly document no site export.

Does FNJ build online stores?

No. FNJ's AI builder makes marketing websites with no cart, checkout or product database. You link its buttons to payment links or an existing store, and host the exported site yourself.
