What happens if you stop paying for Framer?

If you cancel a Framer site plan, nothing changes on the day you cancel: Framer says your plan benefits stay active until the end of the current billing cycle, and its help center says projects aren't deleted when a workspace subscription expires. After that date the paid features end, and Framer's documentation is silent on some of the details site owners care about most, such as whether a connected custom domain is detached automatically when the plan ends.

Everything below about Framer's plans and policies comes from Framer's own help center, pricing page and terms of service, read on November 2, 2026. Where Framer is silent, we say so.

Cancel, downgrade and failed payment are three different events

Canceling a site plan

• When it takes effect: at the end of the current billing cycle. Until then your plan benefits stay active, and the cancellation shows in your project settings and your workspace's Plans tab. Framer's terms of service say the same.
• Refunds: canceling doesn't refund unused time. Framer refunds only within 7 days of the initial purchase, or 14 days in the EU and Turkey. If you claimed the free first-year domain that comes with a yearly plan, redeeming that offer gave up the option to request a refund.
• Add-ons: an add-on attached to the canceled plan stays active until the period ends, then ends with the plan. Framer issues no credit for either.
• Legacy pricing: plans bought before October 9, 2025 keep their old price only while you stay on them. If you cancel and resubscribe later, you pay current pricing.

Downgrading to a cheaper plan

You can switch a site to a lower Site plan, such as Pro to Basic, at any time. Framer converts the unused part of your current plan into account credit, which can't be refunded and is applied to future invoices. If you use an add-on the new plan doesn't offer, Framer's refund policy says that add-on is dropped at the moment the plan changes, and its unused value also becomes credit.

A missed or failed payment

Framer's help center documents one consequence. When the subscription covering a workspace's editors lapses, most commonly because of a missed or failed payment, you may see a "Reactivate your workspace" prompt, and editing may be restricted across that workspace's projects. The projects stay in the workspace, and reactivating restores editing for all of them.

Framer's terms of service go further: if you don't pay undisputed amounts, Framer may suspend your access to the service until they're paid in full, and unpaid amounts can carry interest of up to 1.5% per month.

Framer doesn't publish a grace period or say whether the site stays online while a payment is overdue. Only workspace admins can update payment details, from the Plans tab in workspace settings.

Site plans vs. editor seats

Framer bills two things separately. A Site plan (Basic or Pro) belongs to one project and covers its domain, limits and features. Editor seats belong to the workspace: on Basic and Pro the owner is free, additional editors cost $20 per month and Content Editors $10 per month.

The two are linked. Once you cancel the last site subscription in a workspace, Framer says the editor subscription ends at the end of the current billing cycle. A workspace with no subscription can still have up to 3 editors.

Enterprise plans work differently: Framer's terms say an Enterprise plan's term, renewals and termination notice are set by its Order Form, and Framer's downgrade article applies only to standard Site plans. One Enterprise rule is documented: if you downgrade a site at true-up or renewal, remove its custom domain from the project. Framer says redirecting DNS or moving pages to another project without removing the domain still counts as an active site.

What happens to each part of your site

"Paid plan" means Basic or Pro. The right-hand column is what Framer documents for a project without a paid plan, or what it says happens at the switch.

What Framer's help center doesn't say

As of November 2, 2026, Framer doesn't document:

• whether, or when, a connected custom domain is disconnected after a site plan ends
• whether the site falls back to its framer.app address automatically
• any grace period after a failed payment, or whether the site stays online during it
• what emails it sends on cancellation or a failed payment (it does document bandwidth overage emails)
• what happens to password protection, forms, older analytics and translated locales

If any of these matter, ask Framer support in writing before your end date and plan for the less convenient answer. If content sits behind a password because it's private, take it down rather than assume the password survives.

Before your plan ends

Keep a copy of the site

Framer "does not offer HTML export for self-hosting," according to its own help article, so there's no built-in export. Its data-portability article, by contrast, says every Framer site is published as standard HTML, CSS and JavaScript that you can download at any time and move to any hosting provider, but it names no feature, button or menu for doing that. CMS content can be exported to CSV or JSON with plugins, and Framer's terms encourage you to archive your content regularly.

Two ways to make a copy:

• Marketplace plugins. Third-party plugins such as Full Site Export and Framer to Code turn your published site into downloadable files. Full Site Export's listing says its static copy keeps images, fonts, video and CMS data local.
• FNJ. FNJ converts the published site from its public URL, with no access to your Framer project, into a Next.js project split into named components, static HTML, or an Astro project. Images are copied in as WebP, and you can deploy to Cloudflare Pages or Vercel in one click or download the files. The output still loads Framer's runtime and fonts from Framer's servers, which is why animations behave as they did on Framer and why the Framer project should stay published after you convert. FNJ is paid (pricing), can't convert password-protected pages, and isn't the right tool if you need zero dependency on Framer. Our export tools comparison covers the trade-offs.

Whichever you use, make the copy while the paid plan is still active, so you capture the site visitors see today.

Move the domain first

Your domain is registered with your registrar, not Framer, so you control its DNS. If you claimed a free domain through Framer's yearly-plan offer, it's managed through Hover and renews automatically at the standard rate. Framer says DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate, so point the domain at your new host while Framer is still serving the site. Repoint your forms

Framer's built-in form backend stays with Framer. Once the site runs elsewhere, send form submissions to a service such as Formspree or Tally.

Downgrading instead of leaving

Check your pages, CMS collections, CMS items and bandwidth against the lower plan first; our Framer limitations guide covers the page, CMS, bandwidth and editor caps. Watch bandwidth most: Framer says sustained overages can lead to an automatic upgrade or overage fees.

Frequently asked questions

Does Framer delete my project if I stop paying?

No. Framer's help center says projects remain in the workspace when the workspace subscription expires, though editing may be restricted until you reactivate. It describes permanent deletion as something you do yourself.

What happens to my custom domain when my Framer plan ends?

Framer doesn't say whether, or when, a connected domain is detached, but its Free plan can't connect a custom domain. The domain stays registered with your registrar, so you can point it at another host before the plan ends.

What happens if my Framer payment fails?

Editing may be restricted across the workspace's projects until you reactivate: Framer says a missed or failed payment is the most common reason a workspace's editor subscription lapses, and a lapsed editor subscription can restrict editing. Framer's terms also let it suspend access until undisputed amounts are paid, and it publishes no grace period.

Does the "Made in Framer" badge come back if I stop paying?

Framer doesn't say so directly, but it says sites on its Free plan show a "Made in Framer" banner when published.

What happens if my site goes over the Free plan's bandwidth?

The Free plan includes 1 GB, tracked monthly. The first month over brings an email and a banner, the second an upgrade prompt, and ongoing overages may lead to an automatic upgrade or an overage fee.

Is downgrading the same as canceling on Framer?

No. Canceling keeps your plan until the end of the billing cycle and then ends it; downgrading moves you to a lower Site plan and turns the unused value of the current one into non-refundable account credit.
